“The idea that you will never get old is a big mistake because if you live long enough to keep breathing and saying, ‘Yes, dear,’ you will get old.” – Jerry Rice, resident of The Fountains at Greenbriar
MEET JERRY RICE, WHO HAPPILY EXCHANGED 3,000 SQUARE FEET OF LAKE HOUSE FOR A LIFESTYLE BETTER SUITED TO HIS AND HIS WIFE’S CHANGING NEEDS.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Jerry Rice on Thursday, November 3rd, 2016. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
Jerry spent 20 years in the military and 30 years in Christian ministry with Winnie, his wife of 54 years. Their life of service took them to 48 states and 15 countries, moving them 19 times in 19 years. Long ago, they decided they never wanted to burden family and friends if and when the going got tough. So last year, when Jerry was 81, they moved from Lake of the Ozarks to The Fountains. Now they enjoy continued independence with enhanced peace of mind. They’ve both made good friends, Jerry teaches two Bible studies and neither one has to ever stare at the freezer and wonder what’s for dinner.
LIVE WELL ALWAYS
Growing old is a privilege worth preparing for. People who say they’ll never leave their house should make sure they’ve considered every possibility and option. What if you become ill, or can no longer drive or climb stairs? If you intend to keep living your best life until your last breath, it’s imperative to start learning everything you can about your retirement living options today. “If you choose in advance just like, I saw this place probably eight years ago when we came to this guy’s birthday party. And I said, ‘You know, if I ever come to that point, I’m going to start by looking here because I’ve seen the place, it’s attractive, I’ve been to their apartment. I know what things are like. I could live in a place like this.’ So I decided in advance that this was a possibility.” – Jerry Rice
PLANNING AHEAD PAYS
Since Jerry and Winnie had done their homework early on, before home repairs and health concerns started getting the best of them, they didn’t panic. They didn’t even hesitate. They simply selected their 628-square foot rental residence with a balcony and walk-in shower and settled right in. “Our son, he lives here in Independence. And he’s very pleased with what we have. One of my main goals, several things: One, I don’t want to dump responsibility for my life and my wife on my son because he’s got a wife and four children. And they’re all doing well but they have their own life. And we need to live our own life and be independent of them.” – Jerry Rice
Settling in was easy. Getting used to restaurant-style dining service daily was even easier. Now, when Jerry runs errands, he doesn’t have to worry about Winnie. When their son’s family comes to visit once or twice a week, they enjoy great dinners together – for about one-third the cost of dining out. “We’re comfortable. Our room works out really well for us. And the food is good. We get to choose when we eat and so we have no complaints. We feel like this is exactly where the Lord wanted us so we are content.” – Jerry Rice
